Photonics is a key technology of the 21st century. In pioneering fields such as laser technology and micro-optics, it makes a significant contribution to technological development in production engineering, metrology, IT, electronics, biotechnology and life science.

The non-profit association Photonics BW was founded in Stuttgart in July 2000 in order to generate optimal conditions and to develop strategies for the future of optical technologies. It serves as a network of innovative companies and academic institutions. Photonics BW e.V. is supported by the German ministry of education and research (BMBF).
