The PhotonicNet competence network sees itself as the nucleus for interdisciplinary cooperation in the opto-technologies, primarily aiming at an acceleration of the development, dissemination, and application of the optical technologies.

Lower Saxony, especially the region covering Hannover, Braunschweig, and Goettingen, has always been a stronghold of the optical technologies. This concerted cooperation between the partners allows for unprecedented potentialities to exploit the existing competencies, and it contributes to an active location policy to strengthen the region, as well as helps to identify new fields of application.

Among the partners of the network are globally renowned research institutes, worldwide leading manufacturers of lasers and optical components, universities and technical colleges, as well as institutions from the public and finance sectors. The interdisciplinary structure of the competence network makes it possible to point the way ahead for an optimal transfer of R&D results into practice along the entire net product chain.

The thematic variety of the optical technologies and the competence network functioning as structural measure for the region require to concentrate on issues that are determined by the existing core competencies, potentials, and experience in the network.
